Is My Louisiana Claim Still Timely?
Louisiana’s deadlines — called prescription — are short and unforgiving. This free tool gives a rough, plain-language sense of where you may stand. It is not legal advice, and it is no substitute for talking to a lawyer.
Answer two questions for a general indication. When in doubt, the safest assumption is always that your deadline is sooner than you think — so do not wait to get a real answer.
The check
If you are unsure which category fits — for example, whether your situation is medical malpractice or another kind of injury — choose “not sure.” The rules differ and a lawyer should confirm which applies.
Use the date of the accident, injury, treatment, death, or statement. If you only recently discovered a harm you could not have known about earlier, the rules can differ — note that and ask a lawyer.
Please read. This tool is a free educational aid, not legal advice, and using it does not create an attorney-client relationship. It applies only general Louisiana timing rules and cannot account for the many exceptions that change a real deadline — including claims against government entities, minors, interruption or suspension of prescription, contractual periods, out-of-state issues, and Mississippi law. Deadlines are matters of fact and law that depend on details this tool does not collect. Never rely on this result to decide whether to act. If there is any chance your deadline is approaching, contact a lawyer right away — once a deadline passes, a claim is usually lost no matter how strong it was.
